The Vision of a French Architect From the 1700s Still Impacts the US Capital City Today

June 12, 2020

As an architectural photographer, I have a deep respect and admiration for the work that architects do. The impact they have on a city and the world at large is immense and cannot be understated. These are the people that literally carve the world around us with the aim of making it better.

In a recent video by a channel called Cheddar, Nora Ali the presenter, discusses why Washington DC doesn’t have any really tall buildings. Almost every major city in the US is full of super tall buildings and sky scrapers, which makes Washington DC seem a little odd. To put things in to context, Leeds, a city in the UK with a population of less than half a million has a good number of really tall buildings. Washington DC has a population of over 700,000 yet no tall buildings. The common misconception is that many people believe no building can be taller than the dome of the Capitol, however this video helps correct that myth.

Ali discusses some of the reasons why this is the case in the video and it is interesting to see how the City has developed. From it’s early stages of taking inspiration from French architecture, to what it is today.

I’m constantly impressed by how architects and city planners impact our lives and the very world we live in.

Let me begin by saying that I’m a huge fan of modern architecture. I absolutely love and adore the work of many current architects and engineers. I think it’s amazing how they’ve been able to overcome so many previously thought impossible problems and many of the results are simply incredible. Unfortunately, Bridgewater Place in Leeds is not one of them.

Medium format cameras have long been known for their incredible ability for producing beautiful colours. This generally comes down to the fact the larger sensor medium format cameras like the Phase one 100mp and the Hasselblad H6D 100c produce 16-bit raw files.
